The College offers both post-graduate and under-graduate courses in a number of subjects in the three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce. However, the Arts stream is the largest in terms of number of students in both the Honours and General courses.
Both male and female students study in the college. Maulana Azad College was founded on 9 December 1926 by Victor Bulwer-Lytton, 2nd Earl of Lytton, then Governor of Bengal. It was originally called Islamia College. Under-graduate courses are offered in almost every subject of Arts, Science and Commerce. Urdu, Arabic and Persian are taught. Post-graduate courses are offered in Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, English and Urdu. Economics is one of the most dynamic and sought after departments of the college and is ranked among the best in the state.
The Maulana Azad College has been accredited as grade B by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The College offers courses such as Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Bachelor of commerce (B.Com), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). The institute's infrastructure is modern with well equipped facilities. The institute provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. The college has a state-of-art computer laboratory equipped with P-IV nodes on LAN system with free internet access through 512 Kbps broadband facility. The classrooms/ lecture halls in the college are well ventilated.
The Institute has a well-stocked library consisting about 10,000 books and journals. The Institute hosts regular personality development workshops, Regular seminars, workshops and conferences. Maulana Azad College runs a placement cell for its student guiding them through the placement process and provides them placement offers and interviews via campus placements. The Institute has collaborated with many multi-national companies for campus recruitment.
