An important advisory position, a company secretary is a professional employed by companies with a paid up share capital of 50 lakhs or more. Although a company secretary is mainly involved with the legalities in conducting business, from filling in tenders and legal business documents to communicating with shareholders, the role is getting more diverse. In a dynamic business environment, company secretaries are also taking on a more active role in the finance and accounting departments in companies. Hence, the field offers an exciting career for those with a keen understanding and passion for commerce.
The course for company secretaries is recognized by and affiliated to the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. It is rigorous 3-level course, wherein students have to clear three different examinations to take up the profession. The foundation course of 8 months is open to all students who have cleared their 12th examination. At the end of the foundation course, students need to clear an examination to be eligible for the intermediate level. The intermediate level is a 9-month course open to students who have cleared the foundation course, or have a relevant graduate or master’s degree. After clearing the intermediate level students are eligible for the final company secretary course and exam. They are also required to undergo practical training in order to become qualified company secretaries. Most students choose to pursue this course along with a Bachelor’s in Commerce (B.Com), because the degrees complement each other and provide an added impetus to a student’s academic record.
