A three-year, full-time undergraduate degree in biotechnology, the Bachelor of Technology in biotechnology or B.Tech (biotechnology) is a professional course that deals with the use of bioprocesses and living organisms in the field of medicine, engineering, food science, agriculture, and technology. From the making of milk products to the disposal of industrial waste, biotechnology has a vast application and offers growing job opportunities. Hence, it is among the most sought after courses among students completing class 12.
Besides B.Tech, biotechnology is also offered as a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science course. It is open to all students who studied in the science stream during 10+2. The basic eligibility requirement is physics, chemistry and biology or mathematics as compulsory subjects. Institutes usually have minimum cut-offs for these subjects for admission, and may also have entrance tests. Hence, it’s best to check these details before time. The course begins with refresher modules in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and life sciences, and also introduces students to the basic concepts in biotechnology. Second year onwards, the course becomes more specialized with modules such as microbiology, bioengineering, genetics, biostatistics, molecular biology, food and plant biotechnology, bioinformatics, developmental biology, and microbial processing engineering among others. The course has a significant practical component, and includes regular practicals, projects, and a viva-voce.
