As affluence increases around the world, people are getting more conscious about the way their present themselves and personal care has become a lucrative business. Perfumes and cosmetics are quintessential products in the beauty business and billion-dollar business empires have been built around them. The postgraduate diploma in perfumery and cosmetics management is a recently introduced, niche qualification that trains students to become managers in this fast emerging field. The course duration is between one to two years, and the syllabus covers both technical as well as managerial aspects of the business. Students are introduced to the raw materials used in making perfumes and cosmetics and the chemical processes involved in their manufacture. They are taught about product testing and the legalities involved. They are also taught about the various types and grades of cosmetics and perfumes, and the human considerations involved in the manufacture of these products, such as the physiology of skin, hair, and teeth. In addition to these, the course also involves management modules that cover general management, human resource management, finance and accounting, information management, marketing management, and entrepreneurship and strategic enterprise development. At the end of the course students can seek lucrative careers with a long list of companies involved in the manufacture of cosmetics and perfumes, as well beauty chains, spas, and similar businesses.
