Master of Technology or M.Tech is a postgraduate programme in a specialized branch of Engineering or a related discipline. For example, a student pursuing a Master’s in Electrical Engineering can choose to specialize in power, energy, or telecommunications, based on what the college offers. Course duration can vary between 2-3 years based on whether a student pursues it after completing a 4-year undergraduate degree in engineering, or a 3-year undergraduate degree in science. Since the M.Tech is a much-in-demand prestigious qualification, many students also opt for it after completing a Master’s in Science or related disciplines.
Admission to M.Tech is based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), which is supervised by the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institutes of Technology. However, it’s also advisable to check with institutes of your choice on their specific selection criteria for the course you are looking at. Students can also check on a number of scholarships and awards given by institutes such as the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). A number of specialist jobs are available for M.Tech graduates, in fields such as research and technology.
