Unless specified as a postgraduate programme, the diploma in export-import management is open to all students completing class 12. Both full-time and part-time courses as well as distance learning programmes are offered and the duration varies from a few months to a year. Admission is usually based on merit, but some institutes may require a written test or an interview – students need to inquire on these in advance.
The syllabus is extremely hands on and includes modules on the government policies in import and export, such as the customs act, import-export incentives, and special economic zones; the necessary documentation required for import-export; export marketing, which includes conducting market research and planning strategies to enter international markets; import-export finance, which deals with foreign exchange and related areas; shipping and packaging, which includes technical knowledge on bar-coding commodities, various types of containers for storage and types of packaging. Students can also opt for specializing in the import or export of a particular commodity, such as garments, agricultural products, electronic goods, chemicals and dyes, handicrafts, handloom, gems, glassware etc. The course enables students to immediately begin working in the field or even starting their own import-export business.
