An integrated 5-year undergraduate degree in law, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Law or BALLB combines training in basic Arts (generally humanities) with a specialization in Law. Students pursue this course post 10+2, and are required to appear in an entrance exam. Many institutes accept the results of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), which combines a written component with group discussion and personal interview. However, some institutes also have their own admission tests. An extremely popular professional course, BA.LLB requires an analytical mind, logical reasoning, good communication skills (both written and verbal), as well as an eagle eye for details.
Students pursuing this course can opt for specialization in various forms of law, from contract to criminal law. After completing the course, they are eligible for employment at various firms, as well as the legal department at corporates. After a few years, one can also take up independent legal practise. Law is a multifaceted field, requiring rigorous work. Scenes of black-clad lawyers fighting cases in the court, usually glamorized in films and on television, are only but a facet of a lawyer's work.
