The Master of Philosophy or M.Phil is a postgraduate degree in research open to all students who have completed their master’s. It is awarded by a number of universities, in fields such as Arts, Social Sciences, Archaeology, Philosophy, and Theology, and is highly recommended for those keen on taking up an academic career.
Students taking this course need to have a keen understanding of the subject they intend to take up, because an M.Phil requires extensive research and analysis, as well as good writing skills, in order to a prepare a comprehensive, well thought out, and well-written thesis, which is an integral part of any M.Phil programme. Students taking up an M.Phil can look at various research fellowships awarded by institutes in India and abroad. The course duration is generally 18 months, with a year of study and 6 months for the dissertation or final thesis. After completing an M.Phil students can take up a doctorate or PhD programme.
