A niche postgraduate qualification in healthcare, the Master of Hospital Administration is offered at select institutes in India. Admission is open to all students who have completed undergraduate studies and have an interest in healthcare management. It is based on a written test, group discussion, and personal interview to gauge the aptitude and skill of aspirants. Since the seats are limited, this can be a difficult course to enter. The entry requirements may vary at different institutes; hence, it is pertinent that students inquire these in advance. For example, some institutes, such as AIIMS prefer medical students, while others like TISS take non-medical students.
The course is extremely hands on and involves intensive project work as well as practical experience (including an internship and on-the-job training). However, the course content is more about delivering medical services at a hospital rather than actual medical training – although basic medical knowledge is always useful. The syllabus includes modules that train students in the basic concept of health, preliminary human anatomy and physiology, basics of pathology and pharmacology, healthcare services, the demographic, health and population policies, procedures and processes in hospital management and services, health education, communication, technology required, concepts in management, and legal aspects of healthcare among others. At the end of the course students can join hospitals and similar medical centres as administrative assistants and rise through the ranks.
