If you have found a calling in teaching others and building the potential of students studying in educational institutes, then the Bachelor of Education or B.Ed may just your deal. A one-year training course, B.Ed requires a minimum qualification of a Bachelor's degree in Arts, Science, Commerce or the like. Once you have completed a basic degree, and have made up your mind on taking up teaching, you can apply for this course. However students can also take up B.Ed after completing their master’s. Students completing B.Ed after graduation are called Graduate Trained Teachers (TGT), while those doing B.Ed. after post graduation are called Post Graduate Trained Teachers (PGT). Arts students can train for teaching subjects such as history, geography, and English, while Science students can take up subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics.
Since the B.Ed is considered a specialized degree, it requires candidates to sit for entrance examinations. Most universities have their individual exams and it's best to approach them for information regarding admissions. A B.Ed is a basic qualification required for teaching in primary and high schools and it is usually recognized by the National Council for Teaching Education. For teaching at colleges students need to appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the University Grants Commission. However, NET candidates need to have completed their Master’s degree.
