The NMITD was founded in 2001 by Dr. Navinchandra Mehta, an eminent educationist and philanthropist. The institute is affiliated with the University of Mumbai and has been granted autonomous status by the government of Maharashtra.
The NMITD has a state-of-the-art campus that is spread over an area of 25 acres. The institute has well-equipped laboratories, workshops, and classrooms. It also has a library that houses more than 45,000 books and journals.
