MBBS-Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
|
Popularized in the movie “Munnabhai MBBS”, Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery, also called MBBS, is a 5-year undergraduate degree in medicine necessary for all students who wish to pursue the career of a general practitioner, or specialize in medical fields like neurology, cardiology, gynaecology etc. With several lakhs of students applying for admission to a limited number of seats, MBBS can often prove notoriously difficult to get into and study.
Admission is open to all students who have completed 10+2 with a minimum of 50% in all the science subjects – physics, chemistry, and biology. Selection is done through an All India Entrance test. However, some major institutes also have their own entrance tests. Hence, it’s important to inquire with the institutes on the application criteria. Owing to the limited number of seats, only those who perform exceptionally well in the exam are placed for an MBBS, others can seek admission to related courses like Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery, and Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery.
The course structure is broken into several semesters that cover anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, microbiology, community and forensic medicine, study in surgery and allied subjects such as ophthalmology, anaesthesiology, ENT, orthopaedics, and medicine and allied subjects such as paediatrics, psychiatry, dermatology, gynaecology, and obstetrics. The course involves intensive studies, lab work, and attachments at Out Patient Departments in hospitals. At the end of the course all students need to complete a one-year compulsory internship, after which they can become practising paediatrics, or take up specialization. Since medicine is an extremely sensitive field because of its strong human implications, it’s quintessential to check the credentials of the institute offering the course, the lab facilities, placement record, faculty, attachments etc. Also, for those looking to go abroad for further studies, it’s important to check on whether MBBS is recognized by the university, as some institutes require all students to go through a foundation course.
